Synopsis

This collection is part of the evaluation of the activities of students who took the course Biotechnology, Development and Human Rights, in the Postgraduate Program in Legal Sciences, at the Center for Legal Sciences, Federal University of Paraíba - PPGCJ/UFPB, themes discussed and promoted by the Research Group BIOTECHNOLOGY, BIODIREITO AND ENVIRONMENT IN HUMAN RIGHTS - UFPB/CNPq.

The technological sciences, together with the other sciences, have gone from being mere "isolated sciences" to being part of common connections developing "cutting-edge" research, with a view to scientific, socio-economic and social growth and development, in line with pre-existing, localized and emerging situational needs.

The subject Biotechnology, Development and Human Rights introduced the master's and doctoral students of the PPGCJ/UFPB to the progress of biotechnologies, from their genesis, through the principles of bioethics, technological revolutions, progress and technological development as products resulting from the exact sciences, health and why not also the social and human sciences, within the transdisciplinarity proper to the sciences, in the search for a scientific approach, aiming at the unity of knowledge.

In turn, biotechnology has been used in biological processes in medicine for a long time, involving modifications to organisms, cells or molecules through genetic engineering, as well as acting in genetic improvement, with a view to procedures and based on the bioethical principles already demonstrated.

The legal and theoretical discussions in the course covered not only national legislation, case law, the resolutions of the National Health Council - Ministry of Health, the Federal Council of Medicine, but also international documents from the United Nations - UN and its agencies, which deal with ethical precepts, research with human beings, culminating in critical and scientific training on the topics presented in the classroom. Lessons learned, apprehended and shared among all, with a view to demonstrating that the atrocities that took place with human beings in Nazi Germany should never happen again, knowledge that must be passed on to present and future generations.

As a result of the evaluation of the course, we present some works, transformed into chapters of this organized work, which can serve as a source of information for readers of the subject in question. The authors, Vagner Ferreira do Nascimento, Nurse, PhD in Bioethics, Lecturer at the State University of Mato Grosso (UNEMAT) and Ronaldo Souza Piber, Lawyer, Specialist in Bioethics and Master's student in Medical Law at the Santo Amaro University (UNISA), are also to be thanked for their contribution in sharing the knowledge inherent in the subject, as a link between Higher Education Institutions.
