Cissampelos sympodialis Eichl. (Menispermaceae): Milona – From 1988 to 2020
Keywords:
Milona, Cissampelos sympodialisSynopsis
The species Cissampelos sympodialis Eichl. belonging to the Menispermaceae family, it is a vine known popularly as Milona, used in folk medicine to treat respiratory diseases associated with asthma, cough, bronchitis and common cold. Several alkaloids were isolated from this plant, two of them wariftein and milonine revealed a predominance of pharmacological activities that justify the use of this plant in anti-inflammatory processes associated with asthma.
Milona is one of the plants most studied by the UFPB team of researchers. Currently domesticated and cultivated in the Medicinal Plants Garden of the Postgraduate Program in Natural and Synthetic Bioactive Products / IPeFarM / UFPB, João Pessoa, PB, Brazil, from where the results shown in this document came from. To date, 41 theses and dissertations have been defended, four (4) conclusion papers, 61 scientific papers have been published in national and international journals, eight (8) book chapters, three (3) patent filings, seven (7) videos available on youtube and an award. All of this content is supported by dozens of preclinical, toxicological and clinical pharmacological studies in the most diverse aspects. Milona is so important that it became a symbol of the state of Paraíba by Law No. 9,801, of June 14, 2012, published in the Official Gazette. At UFPB there is a “little corner” called “Recanto da Milona” which is located at the Research Institute for Drugs and Medicines.
